Like any other hobby you may be part of, metal detecting does have a variety of available equipment that goes along with the fun. Some equipment will be part of the adventure each and every time you head out; however, there is also equipment that you may want to have on hand when you are detecting in certain types of environments or available if the need should arise.
Of course, the most important equipment piece that you take with you is the metal detector itself. Be sure to find a detector that meets your needs, whether you are combing beach shores, open fields, or riverbanks. Each detector has numerous bells and whistles that will make it most beneficial for the type of environment it is made for. If you are a beginning hobbyist and plan to spend just small spurts of time enjoying the hobby, then the detector you choose may be a on the lower, more affordable end that only does the basics. If you are an avid detector, then you will want, of course, a detector that is more advanced and utilizes more up-to-date technology. Whichever detector you find to meet your need, be sure to practice with it and become familiar with all of the available functions it offers.
Another type of equipment you may want to invest in is equipment that will document your finds. One such type of equipment is a digit camera or other device to photograph targets. This will be especially important if you are considering relic hunting. The more precise you are when you locate relics, the more information can be used to document where the relic was found and the surrounding condition it was found it. If you think you do have a relic, be sure to document it before digging it and removing it from its original location. Also, you may want to carry a portable GPS in order to record exact locations of your find. Journals that keep a running of list of potential detecting locations are helpful. You may also use this journal to document an areas history, make a sketch of the area, record area conditions, and what was found will also be helpful. This is especially true if you plan on returning to the area.
When you locate a target, you will also want to have something to remove the target from the ground. Some targets will be very near to the surface. You may be able to use a simple screwdriver to remove these types. Others will be further down in the ground, and you will need a spade or other digging device to work further down. When using this equipment work slowly, especially if you are on the search for relics. You do not want to damage the find itself. Other targets you may want to remove using a scoop. Scoops are more beneficial on sites where you are more opt to find coins or jewelry pieces such as the beach or parks. You may also find it more comfortable to bring something to kneel down on when you are digging. Some have used gardeners pads and found these very beneficial. I would also suggest keeping on hand lots of water and sunscreen if you are out during hot, humid days. Bring plenty of water as you will be continuously moving or digging. I would suggest extra b atteries to be used in the event that your detector decides to run low. Also, remember to remove batteries to give them longer life. I would suggest brining extra covers for LCDs, especially if working near water areas like riverbanks and the beach. Extra rags are always helpful to clean small areas of your detector if they should get sandy. Be especially careful of your sweat when you are working with detectors with sensitive technology. Earphones are helpful when you are working near a group of people. Also, always carry trash bags to dispose of trash you may find along the way.
Metal detecting can be a thrilling and relaxing hobby. Once the initial investment of the detector is done, it is up to you to begin to decide what accessories you would enjoy to make your hunting more thrilling. Once you become more proficient at detecting certain types of environments, take an opportunity to investigate which metal detecting equipment fits that need.
