Panning for Gold in Alaska - Travel

Alaska has been a hot spot for gold mining and gold panning for years. But now, with the recent spike in gold prices, Alaska's outer territories have never been hotter. So if you're interested in getting a piece of the action there are a few things you'll need to know first.

Where do I start?

Where you start depends on what you're interested in doing? Is this recreational? An adventure? Or your future business? Depending on your original intent my advice could vary. For a recreational visit you may want to start in a cold rich town like Juneau. For recreational gold hunters you want to get to know the area. Juneau has plenty of other activities, people, and a lot of gold. You want to start small, get to know the people and the area. For adventures and future businesses you want to start to explore more of the outer territories. Porcupine Creek and various other areas have picked up in popularity over the last few years and may better suite your style. Either way, make sure you spend the time fully researching the area's in Alaska you plan to visit. A great resource for this would be GoldPanningLocations.com. These folks not only provide great information on gold panning locations in the US but continue to update their site with current gold sites and provide go od background material and resources to do your research.

Bring the Right Equipment

Preparation is key! Know what you need depending on the type of gold mining or panning you plan on doing. For a first trip to another state, be it Alaska, California, or any other gold hot spot I always recommend a gold pan as the basic equipment. Gold filled river streams are not only a fun way to spend some time but also the first indication of excellent claims for placer mining. Don't ever expect to establish a mine, and find gold on a large scale in only one trip. Your first trip should always be intended for gold prospecting. If you surf the web you may eventually come across a gold site that can provide real recommendations on the best gear for panning and prospecting but one piece I have recommended to all my clients is the Gold Pan Kit. It's a must for travelling, easy to keep on you, and a great start for any serious miner/panner. So remember that with a little bit of research and the right gear it is possible to have a successful gold mining trip. You just have t o make sure your expectations are reasonable and you're willing to get your hands dirty!
