Who doesnt enjoy a good metal detecting tale? Its the thrill of finding something substantial that keeps every true detectorist interested in the hobby. There are numerous stories that abound about treasures of historical relics that connect us with our past, jewelry finds that scatter across beach shores or open field, as well as coins from every decade that cover every land area known to us. A variety of available resources recount truly fascinating metal detecting stories across just about every land area of our Earth.

When metal detecting a beach shore, there is always the hopeful expectation of finding a piece of jewelry that has been tossed to and fro or buried below the surface of the shore. What a reward, returning a priceless valuable to an owner whos lost it. There are many such stories of wedding rings, class rings, and other valuables being found and returned. There are also numerous websites that help people post their lost valuables in hopes that their jewelry is found and returned.

Coins, coins, and more coins. It seems that one of the quickest thrills that most metal detective enthusiast get to experience is that of finding some type of coin. The excitement of checking out the date and type of coin is a quick return on your detecting investment. Thousands and thousands of stories are recorded of coin caches located in just about every possible detecting environment. Even bigger than the types of environments to find these coins is the variety of coins that can be found. Stories of coins that date back to the early empires are numerous. A variety of coins that record US history can be located throughout the country from wheat coins, to trademark colonial coins, to famous silver dollars. A remarkable coin cache was recorded in 2010 in the UK when one of the largest hoards of Roman coins was discovered by a metal detecting hobbyist. The massive find was discovered within centimeters of the grounds surface. Archeologists were called in to help excavate the unbelievable 50,000 + coins buried within a clay pot. The coins date back to the mid- to late- 2500 AD when the self- proclaimed emperor Carausius reigned. Its a find that took months to uncover and record. Stories upon stories exist of metal detecting hobbyist finding valuables. Some targets are valuable in monetary terms; however, there are just as many stories that are surrounded by understanding a new part of our history or making a human connection as we return a precious jewelry piece.
