Its the excitement and thrill of finding treasures that makes metal detecting such a great hobby. If you have not had much luck and only found a few coins and trash the chances are that you will store the metal detector in the closet and will stay there for a long time. So what can you do to prevent that from happening?
I almost want to say lower your expectations, just be prepared to find and take home a lot of trash! There is no other way, if you dont go through everything you wont find anything. Yes you will end up throwing away 60 80% of what you brought home. But what you find depends on much more than just your metal detector. It depends on how much you know of metal detecting itself, the tricks of the trade if you will, and of course where you go to find your treasures. Dont expect to find a musket round on the beach.
The more effort you put into finding great treasures, the more you will be likely to find. Do your research. Research places and relics in your area, or close by. The internet is full of information and the local library will be one of the most valuable resources of information of your area. Look up websites to find ideas for new places to go hunting. But where ever you go, you want to know the history of where you are going to know what to expect and where the best place to find it would be. Type in History of in any search engine and you are bound to get tons of results for any area you might be thinking of going. Its also good to know the history for when you find something of value, you might be able to put a date to your treasure, or just to know more about what you found.
If researching is not for you, you can always join a metal detecting club. Metal detecting clubs does the research of historical sites and areas for you along with organization with the owners of the properties, the legal aspects of things and host treasure hunts that you can join. Clubs also gives you the chance to meet and talk to people who can give you valuable advice and can become new friends. You just need to pack your gear and show up.
Never overlook or count a site out that you think has been overhunted. You can go back and detect the site over and over again after big rain storms. When the ground is soaked, the wet ground is more conductive and you might find deeper treasures. After hard winters the ground shifts after it thaws, making it possible to reveal new treasures which werent there last year. Doing so gives you a better chance to find more lost and /or valuable treasures.
Just to recap: Metal detecting takes more skill than just following the beeping sound of a metal detector, do your research, join a club, enjoy the adventure and learn how to find those really valuable treasures.
